A Human Relief Organization on Pine Ridge Reservation
Wings of Hope is a subsidiary of Wings as Eagles Ministries. Its primary focus is on community development and humanitarian aid.
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is unlike any other community in North America. In fact, the Oglala Lakota people of Pine Ridge live in some of the lowest, most impoverished conditions in the country. Unemployment is alarmingly high, and most everyone lives below Federal poverty levels. Likewise, food is hard to come by, and proper medical care is even scarcer. Most living on Pine Ridge must do so without the most basic human necessities. When donors and volunteers seek out a human relief organization for which to bestow time, labor, and funding, they often turn to third-world countries residing outside of U.S. borders. They forget that third-world conditions exist right here in the U.S., amongst our country’s first inhabitants.
Likewise, life expectancy on Pine Ridge is low due to a lack of vital nourishment and suitable health care. The infant mortality rate and rate of alcohol-related death are both 300% higher than the national average, and the rates of diabetes and tuberculosis are 800% higher than anywhere else in the U.S. More than half of all residential structures on the reservation are recommended for “burning to the ground” due to potentially fatal mold infestation.
Where there’s Relief, There is Hope…
Wings of Hope is a human relief organization qualified in the state of South Dakota and engaged in the pursuit of a proper living conditions and a better quality of life for the poorest of the poor here in our own country. Wings of Hope tends to the most pressing of human issues, such as Oglala Lakota food distribution, clothing, shelter, and health issues.
Oglala Lakota Food Distribution
A major component of the WOH human relief organization is food distribution. In addition to providing basic provisions to those families without access to proper nutrition, The Dream Center cafeteria keeps the hungry children and families of Pine Ridge fed throughout the year. In addition, regular community events, such as the Free Wednesday Night BBQ for all communities, ensure a hot meal.
Access to medical attention on Pine Ridge is nearly non-existent. WOH, in conjunction with The Dream Center, provides pastoral care to combat the failing health, wellness, and vitality of the Oglala Lakota people. Funds donated to WOH go, in part, to supporting medical clinics and providing supplies.
